01 - THE NAME

COP is short for Conference of the Parties (of the UNFCCC), but it is also referred to as the United Nations Climate Change Conference. It’s an annual event organized for the twenty-seventh time. 

02 - TIME AND PLACE

The summit occurs from November 6 through November 18, 2022. The host country is Egypt; the event takes place in the city of Sharm El-Sheikh.

03 - BACKGROUND

In 1992, the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) was signed, an international environmental treaty dealing with climate change. Every year since 1995, representatives of the signatories have met to discuss climate change measures.

04 - ATTENDEES

Nearly a hundred heads of state and representatives from 190 countries are expected to attend. Other influential world leaders who confirmed their presence at the conference include European Commissioner Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, United States President Joe Biden, as well as newly elected Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

One of the best-known faces of the UN’s annual climate summit, Greta Thunberg, will not be attending.

05 - KEY THEMES, AGENDA

The summit’s goals and visions were summarised in four keywords: Mitigation, Adaptation, Finance, and Collaboration.

The event kicks off on the 7th and 8th with the World Leaders Summit (WLS). The second week of the summit will focus on significant issues such as water, biodiversity, energy, and gender. Following that, government representatives will address some of the most critical climate-related topics in thematic days, such as financing, decarbonization, adaptation, and agriculture.
